a5c7b9f00b Lew Harper is a Los Angeles based private investigator whose marriage to Susan Harper, who he still loves, is ending in imminent divorce since she can't stand being second fiddle to his work, which is always taking him away at the most inopportune of times. His latest client is tough talking and physically disabled Elaine Sampson, who wants him to find her wealthy husband, Ralph Sampson, missing now for twenty-four hours, ever since he disappeared at Van Nuys Airport after having just arrived from Vegas. No one seems to like Ralph, Elaine included. She believes he is cavorting with some woman, which to her would be more a fact than a problem. Harper got the case on the recommendation of the Sampsons' lawyer and Harper's personal friend, milquetoast Albert Graves, who is unrequitedly in love with Sampson's seductive daughter, Miranda Sampson. Miranda, who Harper later states throws herself at anything "pretty in pants", also has a decidedly cold relationship with her stepmother, Elaine. As Harper begins his investigation, he is often joined by one or two new sidekicks, Miranda, and/or Allan Taggert, Sampson's private pilot who was the last person to see him before his disappearance. Living on the Sampson estate, Allan is also Miranda's casual boyfriend who Harper coins "Beauty" because of his preppy good looks. They discover that Sampson has indeed been kidnapped as they receive a ransom note. As Harper follows leads, he ends up in the underbelly of Los Angeles society, which includes encounters with Betty Fraley, a junkie lounge singer, Fay Estabrook, an ex-movie ingénue now overweight alcoholic, and Claude, a religious cult leader. At each of Harper's stops, people seem to want to beat him up or worse kill him. The case takes a slight turn after they decide to pay the $500,000 ransom to see where it leads.

What a movie!<br/><br/>Perhaps not everyone has read the Raymond Chandler series, but you don&#39;t need to! This is a raw detective movie that&#39;s as funny as it is serious. And let me tell you, it&#39;s no walk in the park.<br/><br/>Harper is grit. His world is dark. He knows it.<br/><br/>Paul Newman has played few better roles. He reminds me of comedian Norm MacDonald in his role as Harper. In fact, if there were to be a modern remake, that&#39;s who I&#39;d cast as the lead.<br/><br/>At any rate this movie rips you off the couch and takes you for a ride!<br/><br/>I rate this movie 9.5/10
When you start naming detective authors from the 20th century, you get a short list of names. Christie, Hammett, Chandler, maybe sometimes Rex Stout or a few others. But the name that&#39;s on every real mystery fan&#39;s list is Ross MacDonald for his Lew Archer novels. The first and arguably MacDonald&#39;s best is The Moving Target, a thrilling pot boiler about a missing millionaire and a household of people who frankly would be much better off without him. <br/><br/>Harper is Hollywood&#39;s attempt to turn The Moving Target into a moving picture with Paul Newman performing the roll of Lew Harper (changed for some sort of Holly-weird reason). The result is Newman at his prime and by changing Archer to Harper, America&#39;s future salad dressing king can make the role his own. Newman sizzles on the screen and every single line out of his mouth feels smooth and as cool as a menthol cigarette. The film&#39;s cast is filled with talent as well. Lauren Bacall, Robert Wagner, and a cast of other old studio pros all support Newman&#39;s quest to be the first and best easy going PI. <br/><br/>But as good a film is, Harper can&#39;t seem to live up to the novel it&#39;s based on and it&#39;s easy to understand why this film (and it&#39;s later sequel) never quite stay memorable in the minds of American film fans. Harper is a film that tries so hard, achieves so much, and yet still manages to waste it&#39;s potential.
Paul Newman in a bungled attempt to recapture the Bogart private-eye world of The Big Sleep. Shelley Winters gives the picture artificial respiration for a few minutes, but it soon relapses. A private-eye movie without sophistication and style is ignominious.
